That Ol’ Black Magic

It’s finally cold enough in the mornings here in Pittsburgh that I second-guess my usual boots and a skirt combo walking to work. Leggings and tights can only do so much to keep me warm when we’re in the low 40′s and the mercury is dropping every day.

Just in time, my friends at The Gap sent me a free batch of three of their new styles in black pants to test out:

The modern boot pant

Call me old-fashioned, or just a loyal fan of  What Not to Wear, but I think it’s hard to go wrong with a dark bootcut pant. These are  going to go in my work rotation since they are a nicer blended fabric- but still machine washable. Hooray! The pockets are just there for appearances, so they fit clean and smooth around the hips and back. Being sort of … ahem… flat on the back end, I thought the fit on me was perfect. No saggy extra fabric where I just don’t have it to give. They were nice and snug, but not tight around the waist and hips- very fitted. If you are fuller in that area, I might try their curvy style instead.

The boy fit pant

Another good work pant, but this one has a little more edge. In college, I loved the menswear look- and by that I mean, buying men’s pants at the thrift store.  When you’re short like me and every muffin goes to the belly area, the more generous waist area is a blessing. And again, the  lack of a backside… These are a much more forgiving fit in the waist area, true to menswear, but gently taper down to a more straight legged fit and a bit of slouch at the ankle. I can see putting them on with a fitted top (because a generous waist= no muffin top) and going out at night. The fabric is similar to the dressy boot cut style, so they will also work for the office.

The slim crop pant

The first time I wore these out of the house to walk to the store, an old guy shouted “You’re beautiful!” at me from across the street. (OK, he was drunk at 3 pm, but it’s a confidence boost, I suppose). These are slim, a very fitted cut, but not stretchy like the jean leggings. The fabric is a stiffer cotton, with just a little spandex. As a short woman, I love a cropped pant (which looks like a regular pant on five foot tall me). I threw them on with my new biker boots, a long T-shirt and a black jacket. They fit great under the boot, but I definitely wanted a longer top to cover up a little. I’m in my thirties after all, and not slender enough to wear skinny pants with a short top. But again, men shouted from across the street… so, take from that what you will. Definitely a weekend/ night-out pant for me.

They have seven styles rolling out now starting at $49.50. Thanks for the free trial, Gap!

More Free Jeans!

There will be an update on life in the Well of Loneliness, but first, a good thing that happened:

I came home from the beach to a package- a giant skinny denim poster tube. And inside, I found these:

My own free brand new pair of Gap’s fall legging jeans. One size smaller than I’d usually buy. I decided to try them on anyway. And oh my goodness. They fit. Like a glove. They needed rolled up at the bottom, but I’m five feet tall and even the shorter lengths always need rolled up- it’s a problem I’m used to having. Now, keep in mind. I’m no hipster. For one, I’m 33 years old and while I like to think I’m pretty cool, I’m not young enough to be “hip” anymore. I have renter’s insurance, for Pete’s sake. Also, at five feet tall and “curvy” (to be gentle on myself), I am not generally a person who roams the earth in skinny jeans. But these, well, they’re just so comfortable. They feel like really soft, worn denim, but have enough stretch that I can flop on the couch in any contortion without the slightest desire to peel them off and hop back into my sweatpants. These are jeans that keep my pants on. I kid you not. And living alone, I don’t have to wear pants at home very often… ahem.

I love the freebies I get being part of the Brand Ambassador program at Gap. Especially when they’re things I might not usually buy for myself. These jeans have given me a reason to buy boots this fall. And man, I love boots. I look forward to fall just as an excuse to wear boots. Between my muscle-y calves and thick jeans though, buying boots can be a challenge. But now that I have these, I think this may just be the year I put boots on until spring. I really like them that much. And they don’t even have the usual fitted jeans downfall. The rise is low enough not to make me feel like my grandma, and high enough that there is NO MUFFIN TOP. It’s a jeans miracle in my world.

So, because the Gap loves you too, they sent along another free jeans certificate. All you have to do is comment below with one thing you’re looking forward to this fall (fashion-related or otherwise). The random number generator picks our winner. And those of you who entered last time, will get another entry just for coming around again. So, get on it. And be sure you post using an email that you actually check, so I can let you know you won. Your entry deadline is Friday, August 20th at noon EST.

Wrapping Up Summer (and a giveaway)

A few weeks ago, I came home to one of my favorite surprises- a package at the door from The Gap as part of my participation in their Brand Ambassador program. Every now and then they send me new stuff to try out and leave it up to me what to say about it, or if I say anything. Little did they know I was planning a beach getaway, but inside was a cute little bucket and shovel and what I thought was a pair of jeans until I opened it up. Instead of jeans, it was the softest, thinnest faded-est denim jacket I have ever held in my hands:

Now, to be honest, I’m not much of a faded denim girl. I tend to take the standard “What Not to Wear” advice and stick to a nice dark wash that goes day into night. But this particular jacket was soooooo light, I figured I take it out for a spin on happy hour night with BC. He can always be trusted to affectionately mock bad decisions. And it did look really cute over my summer sundress once I had it on. I headed over to the bar and was so glad I had the jacket when I hit the ice-cold air-conditioned bar stool.

And BC entered, walked over, sat down, looked over and said, and I quote: “That’s cute.”

And that’s a good enough endorsement for me.

If you want one of your own, they’re on super sale right now so grab one up. (PS- Gap’s not paying me anything to sell the sale, and gave me the jacket for free, but I hate to skip out on a bargain!).

It’s heading with us to the beach tomorrow to throw on in the evening when it gets chilly after I spend the day in the sunshine trying to get my freckles to grow together into something resembling a tan.

We’ve spent the summer trying to do a lot of the things we always say we’re going to do every summer:

  • an outdoor concert (Roseanne Cash)
  • skipping work to ride rollercoasters at Kennywood
  • having a picnic in the park (with some forbidden cold beers… shhhh)
  • watching 4th of July fireworks on a rooftop
  • drinking champagne on a Saturday afternoon
  • and now, our getaway to the diners of south Jersey and the beach

So, because the Gap was kind enough to think of you all… I’ve got a gift certificate to give away to a random commenter. I’ll just use the random number generator to ensure fairness and justice all around. And because I want more ideas for the rest of my summer, all I want from you is a comment below with one thing you’ve done this summer or a summer activity I shouldn’t miss adding to my list between now and the fall. You’ll need to enter an email address you check for your email when you comment, so I can let you know when you win. Enter any time between now and Thursday the 12th at noon EST. When I get back, I’ll fill you in on the beach and let you know who the big winner is.

Good luck!
