Living a Life Worth Writing About

Podcamp Pittsburgh has come and gone once more and as usual, even when I only attended a few sessions and the meet-and-greet, I found something to inspire me. Britt from In Pursuit of Happiness swung through Pittsburgh to host a session on setting boundaries on your blog and shared her own story of finding those limits for herself.

I suppose in some ways, I have blogged less because life is good, but also because I’m finally dating someone who actually uses the internet. The upside? Great fun playing around Twitter together. The downside? Even with my vaguely “anonymous” format (to keep me off the radar at my day job),  I would hate to write anything that The Lady felt was a betrayal of her own privacy or would negatively impact the super wonderfulness of us, together.

But Britt made one statement that really stuck with me when discussing how to find content when you are reigning in the boundaries a bit. Live a life worth writing about. In her context, she was suggesting a way to avoid becoming boring when life gets routine, but I think that it works on other levels.

For a long time, when I was in an awful relationship, my “life worth writing about” was worth reading about because it was such a disaster. The blog was my form of therapy in many ways and venting to the world about the insanity of it all made me feel better. And truth be told, made for a pretty readable soap opera. While I’d never choose to relive that misery, it was great material. (Saying this sort of thing is why some people find writers and bloggers irritating.)

But being single also gave me a reason to fill my schedule with lots of events and adventures that made for excitement. And while I still have adventures, I’m less eager to book myself solid around the clock. Being at home on the couch watching movies makes for great romance in my world. As exhausted as I get at work, I’d rather be in my pajamas than at a five-star restaurant almost any day.

But! Now I have someone new to have adventures with. And it might be time to start writing some of those adventures down  and starting what I hope will be a magical cycle of having adventures because I want to write more and writing more because I’m having more adventures. *cue the Lion King theme*

In the meantime, expect some technical upgrades around these parts now that winter is on its way and there’s finally a reason to sit inside in front of my laptop. For now, if you like Facebook and want to like this blog on Facebook to add these adventures to your stream, you can do so here.

Inspiration Needed, Inspiration Found

Yesterday I had my first class for a writing workshop I treated myself to, in hopes of upping my game and to get some deadlines in my life. Unlike most writers, who seem to complain that they hate the actual sitting down to write piece, I love writing. I love curling up with my laptop or a notebook and making something out of words. But, I am also a noted procrastinator. I need deadlines to give myself permission to make the writing a priority.

For the workshop, I’ll have assignments due every three weeks with the goal being to stretch myself outside my comfort zone, and possibly develop something for a class public reading in December. On top of that, I’ve added “blog more” to the to-do list, but with all this writing happening, I needed an idea or two about what to write.

Enter the 30 Days of Truth, a meme rolling around that I spotted in Miss Grace‘s Twitter feed. Every day, an assignment to write about. No inspiration necessary.

I’m sure there will be days when the actual events of the day are more urgent, but now I’ll have a list to fall back on for a while. Keep your eyes peeled- I’m bringing the truth, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Tomorrow is Day One.

The PodCamp Experience

Photo by Rob de la Cretaz

So, remember that time I complained that I was lonely? And the lovely Jennie told me to show up to a tweet-up? Well, it’s been quite a month since then- two tweet-ups, a brief rendezvous with some of the people I met there at Johnny Cash Day, and this past weekend- PodCamp Pittsburgh. What the heck is a PodCamp, you may ask? Let’s call it Mecca for social media junkies, a two-day free UnConference with panels all day ranging from basic blogging to complex social media for business.

The first session I went to was BurghBaby’s on finding topics to blog about 52 weeks of the year. You can find the slides here. I confess to not posting as regularly as I want to. I make lists. I take photos. I come home and watch Veronica Mars episodes on Netflix. She challenged me to set deadlines for myself. I think I can. I think I can.

Another real standout for me, was  Jay Fanelli and Rob de la Cretaz‘s session: How to Suck Less on Twitter. I jumped into Twitter without much of a strategy and have been indiscriminately following anyone and everyone. They suggested capping the people you follow around 200 so that you can develop real relationships. While I follow too many publishers for contest and submission updates to ever cut down quite that low, I was able to chop out at least 100 people I was following that I had no idea why I had followed them in the first place or who had dropped off in their tweets months ago. Voila! Much clearer stream already.

Finally, I got a chance to see Laura, from the Secret Agent L Project, talk about her journey starting with one act of kindness and now blogging an international kindness movement through her affiliated agents. If you haven’t seen her on CNN or read her blog, I suggest you head right on over there and sign up to be an affiliated agent and take on your own kindness mission. Her motto: Be kind. No exceptions.

The presentations were all recorded and live-streamed throughout and will be popping up in the next few weeks on the PodCamp Pittsburgh website.  Check back there if you want to see all the amazing folks I did and do some learning for yourselves. PodCamps spring up all over the country. If there is one near you, I insist you attend. No really, I insist.

Not the Post You’re Waiting For

Sometimes being a blogger has its perks. It’s a great way to kill a lunch break or a rainy Saturday.  It can be done in pajamas (or nothing at all, I suppose). You get the chance to meet really great people who root for you when things are going well and send thoughtful messages when they aren’t. And occasionally, if you are very, very lucky, you get free stuff.

You may have noticed that it’s not very commercialized around here. The blog is free, which fits my budget just right, and sometimes the ads on other pages give me a headache or make it too hard to find the actual content. Besides, WordPress won’t let me unless I give them money. Free is one of my favorite words.

So, when I got an email out of the blue asking if I’d like to meet up about hosting a Gap promo party for free  I had my doubts, but hello, the price was right. And when I went to said meeting and was allowed to pick out a Gap outfit for free I realized this could be love.

Call me a sell-out. Fine. I do not intend to blog excessively about my love of all things Gap, with product placement and clever denim taglines. But if you see me around, I may be wearing these very cute (and did I mention free) items .  And fingers crossed, if they liked me back, there may be more schwag in my future. And I promise to share it with you, if that happens.

Because you all rule. And I hope you’ll still love me, even if I am now a proud recipient of the man’s free goodies. Like these?

Not quite the cardigan, I got but the color is right. Mine has a flirty ruffle at the bottom

And yes, I will fill you in on the Canadian. Possibly tonight? Possibly tomorrow morning? Who knows…. I am an international woman of mystery.
